The CAC is a catalyst for universal health care in the State of Connecticut. In conjunction with the Connecticut Conference of the United Church of Christ (UCC) and with funding from the Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut, the CAC has reached out to UCC congregations around the state to raise awareness of health care issues and to mobilize forces to help shape a system of quality, affordable health care that leaves no one out. “It’s a moral imperative,” says Ken Esposito, the congregational organizer for the CAC’s Universal Health Care Initiative. “The State of Connecticut is committed to creating a program that is affordable to everyone. We want to make sure it happens in the right way.” Since October 2007, Ken has been meeting with UCC ministers and congregations through various forums, including second-hour programs on Sundays, potluck suppers, regional interfaith events and workshops. Our work on this area helped the passage of SustiNet, a complete system of health care reform that was proposed to the State legislature by the Universal Healthcare Foundation of Connecticut. The bill overwhelmingly passed the House and Senate in May 2009, overriding the governor’s veto. This, however, is only the first step in a long, two-year process of implementation. The Universal Health Care Foundation has recently renewed our grant for at least another year, enabling us to continue this work.
